With the announcement that Airways will be the home of the PNG Chiefs, the journey toward PNG’s entry into the NRL is now well underway.
While much of the focus naturally falls on the players, the team, and the competition itself, there is another important dimension that is beginning to emerge – the economic opportunities that may grow around the Chiefs concept.
Major sporting franchises rarely exist in isolation. Around them develops an entire ecosystem of activity – tourism, hospitality, merchandise, media, events, logistics, and many other supporting industries. For Papua New Guinea, the arrival of the Chiefs has the potential to create a new sports tourism environment, particularly in Port Moresby.
For small and medium enterprises (SMEs), this presents an interesting question:
Where might the opportunities lie?
In many cases, the most successful SMEs are those that move early – identifying opportunities through innovation, creativity, and smart use of digital platforms and social media.
As discussions around the Chiefs continue to grow, we are beginning to see interest not only locally, but also from Australian businesses looking toward PNG. With supporters, media personnel, sponsors, and visitors expected to travel to Papua New Guinea to experience games and events, there may be opportunities across a range of sectors.
To better understand the ideas and interests of the SME community, we have created a simple opportunity register.
The purpose at this stage is simply to gather ideas and identify areas of potential collaboration.
If you are an SME owner, entrepreneur, or simply someone exploring possibilities in this emerging space, we invite you to complete the short form below.
Your ideas may help shape the conversation around how local businesses can participate in this exciting new chapter for PNG sport. Please note that we do not have any official partnership with the PNG Chiefs – we are merely looking at potential business opportunities that may arise out of this concept suitable for SMEs.
